Hot Water Timer tests

Hot Water Timer tests

HOW TO TEST YOUR HOT WATER TIMER

If your hot water system is not operating correctly one of the first things you should check is if your Hot Water Timer is working correctly (If you have a Hot Water Timer installed).

PLEASE NOTE: If your hot water timer is not working please check these basic things before arranging an electrician with us. If our electrician finds the timer is working normally, we will need to pass on their call out fee.  If you do these checks we can be fairly certain it is faulty and we can replace it under warranty.

The hot water timer is found in your electricity meter box or your 'sub box' (where your main circuit breakers are)

You should be able to easily identify it by the timer dial.  Please see the attached picture with the blue timer control switches.

SETTINGS CHECK

CHECK 1: Is if the operation position is set to timer.  The operation switch will have 3 positions
I = on
0 = off
Timer icon = timer
Please make sure this is set to timer.

CHECK 2: Are the timer settings correct.  The large wheel on the timer will have an on and off position.  The goal is to have the hot water turned on during solar production times.

Typical setting will be turning all switches on at approx 8am and then after approx 3pm all switches should be off.

CHECK 3: If the operation mode is set to timer and the wheel has correct settings we need to see if the wheel actually turns.  Please spin the wheel a full rotation.  Make sure that you return the wheel to the same place as it started.  This will confirm the wheel turns correctly.

CHECK 4: Once you have done check 3, make note of the time setting on the wheel.  Leave the wheel for an hour or more and come back to see if the timer wheel has moved.  If it has moved, we can be certain that hot water timer is working correctly.  If this is the case, then the fault may be that the main hot water supply switch in your meter box has been tripped off or that your hot water system is faulty.

If the wheel did not turn, we can safely assume that the hot water timer is faulty.  If this is the case, please switch the operation mode to I = on.  Your hot water system will now bypass the timer and operate normally.  Please contact us to confirm these tests are done and can arrange for an electrician to call out.  If the timer is under warranty (typically 1 year) there will be no charge to you.  If the timer is out of warranty, we will let you know of the cost involved when you contact us.
